I have been neglecting this blog recently in favour of building an all-new Web site on another platform. This site will remain as an archive.

However, it only seemed right to post today's work here.
I have been meaning for some time to revisit the splendid painting site on Stubbington Down, with its view across to Cannon Heath Down and the vale of Kingsclere. It's only a 40 minute walk, but somehow it kept getting put off...

Cannon Heath Down was the subject of eight plein air oils I did in 2011 and 2012. In fact, the first six paintings posted on this blog were all of Cannon Heath Down!

When I set out today, I was expecting to more or less reprise number 7, which I consider to be the most successful of that series (it is currently hanging in the village primary school, I think in the headmaster's office). I had a canvas of a similar size (Cannon Heath Down 7 is 60 x 25 cm; my new canvas is 60 x 30 cm) with me.

But when I got there, I was rather taken with the stripey field at the foot of the corner of the down, and decided to make a feature of that. It would certainly help balance the colours nicely (number 7, painted in early spring, was rather dominated by blue and green). I decided that I needed a relatively low vantage point, which in turn introduced a number of awkward foreground trees that cut off my view of The Warren (a hollow to the left of the depicted area) all together (the hollow that can be seen is called Coombe Hole).

And so the painting that might have been Cannon Heath Down 9, isn't, quite. I'm still thinking about a title. I also need to take a better photograph - this is courtesy of my 'phone, which wasn't bought for the quality of its camera. (Also, while the shadow cast by blades of grass on our slightly long lawn is quite nice and works rather well, it is a shadow and not part of the painting.)

I'll be reposting all this year's work, including this painting (with a better photograph), on the new site. Watch this space - or look out for a forthcoming post on this blog - for news).

Edit: The painting now has a title ("The Vale of Kingsclere") and a post on my new website.

Three "Crashing Wave" squares

It all started earlier this year when I got my hands on a supply of square mounts, eight inches square with a four inch square aperture. They were a nice size, but I didn't have very many pieces on paper to suit them. Then I realised that some bigger pieces, which didn't quite work as a whole, would look great if they were cut up and the choicest parts presented in these mounts. It seemed to work especially well with pictures done in acrylic ink, with trees and waves being good subjects.

I took the first four of these little pictures to an exhibition in March, and three of them sold from the browser. The last sold during the May Open Studios (West Berkshire and North Hampshire).

With another Open Studios coming up (Hampshire Open Studios, 18 - 27 August), I have made some more of these little pictures. I have been making them as long pictures and then cutting the up into "sets" of up to three squares (the long side of A3 doesn't quite make four lots of four inches, but that's okay because there is more scope for choosing the most interesting bits). Each picture is selected to work on its own, but those in the same set will share things like scale, colour balance and, for the seascapes, the level of the horizon.
The roots of this roadside beech tree reminded me of a wild boar - I could see its head and one giant piggy trotter. I haven't deliberately enphasised either feature, not least because the tree is a beautiful sight in itself, with the large, sinuous branch to the left curving up like the muscular neck of a herbivorous dinosaur (I'm thinking diplodocus or brontosaurus), set against the sundappled screen of leaves.

This is another scene from Nuthanger Down, part of The North Wessex Downs. This AONB (area of outstanding natural beauty) is apparently also referred to as "the Chalkenwolds", which I thought was both amusing and apt, although it doesn't seem to be widely used.

The drawing was made with a single fountain pen (a Jinhao, fitted with a Noodler's Ahab flexible nib) filled with Noodler's bulletproof black ink.
The lighter tones of the leaves were achieved by adding water to the
pen's ink reservoir when it was nearly empty. There is also a small
amount of White added at the very end to show where the light breaks through the screen of leaves.
These two pictures were drawn to investigate the way that the beech roots cling to the steep slope of the hanger (a hillside wood). I had no intention of introducing fantastic beasts, but they crept in, nonetheless...
I found this dragon lying between two roadside beech trees on Nuthanger Down, its tattered wings spread on the ground, looking intently up. Was there a squirrel up there? Or was it remembering its days of flight?
More serpentine beech tree roots, this time on Nuthanger Down, and this time in Noodler's Walnut Brown ink (which I think is based on the colour of walnut ink, but probably isn't made from walnuts).

This ink is only partially "bulletproof", which means that it can be partially washed out and may change colour if exposed to UV light (my short tests on a sunny windowsill haven't demonstrated any noticeable change to date).

I had a bit of trouble "finding" the dragons here. Of course, it's a winter scene (January) and the dragons would have been asleep ...

Henge, oil on canvas, 50 x 50 cm

What is a henge? In short, it is a prehistoric ring bank and ditch, with the ditch on the inside. The word is a backformation from Stonehenge - which doesn't actually have a henge! It's all a bit confusing, but what is certain is that the large earthwork that encircles Avebury (village and stone circles) is called a henge.

And that is where these wonderful beech trees are. They are on top of the henge at Avebury at a point where there is a break for a road. In classic beech tree style, their shallow root systems have resulted in a network of knurled and nobbly roots on the surface of the slope. This is a particularly impressive example of the phenomonen.

I wouldn't like to say how much the erosion caused by the feet of tourists has contributed to the effect, but these trees are very popular. Visitors have tied coloured ribbons to the branches and, in a few cases, the roots. They have left little posies of flowers in the hollows of the roots. I haven't included these votive offerings in my painting, because this painting is about the trees, not about their significance in religion or superstition.

The painting is based on a series of photographs that I took towards the end of June this year. It was a hot and sunny day, but the shade under the beech canopy was almost complete. The tangled roots make for a very suggestive image, and I may develop it further. I have painted (three of) these very trees and their roots before - a small, stylised acrylic called Avebury Roots was the starting point for a short series of "Stained glass trees" three years ago.

Andover, 30 June to 8 August 2018

I am showing five pieces in the group exhibition, Traces of Prehistory, at Andover Museum. The exhibition is themed around the legacy of prehistoric man, and all five members of Artikinesis have interpreted this in different ways. My own contributions are probably the most straightforward, which is fitting as the theme was my idea, based on my love of various prehistoric sites such as hill forts, stone circles and dolmens.

Andover Museum effectively hold two permanent collections. One is the local museum, which gleefully begins with neanderthals and the fine figure that is "Hairy Mary" before rolling on through history to the present day. The other is the Museum of the Iron Age, which is centred upon the impressive hill fort at nearby Danebury Hill. It seemed like the perfect place for Traces.

Artikinesis are Adeliza Mole, Brian R. Marchant, Rosemary Lawrey and myself. We've been working together for three years now, and the results are always interesting.

The exhibition is open:
Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm
Saturday, 10 am to 4pm
until 18 August.Amanda Bateshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16911674615433964697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633904073378886404.post-60373016862794183002018-06-02T17:29:00.000+01:002018-06-02T21:38:35.537+01:00Prussia Cove cliffs

Prussia Cove is a secluded part of the south Cornish coast, with a turbulent history of wrecking and smuggling. Now, however, it is known for its natural beauty and an International Music Seminar. When the tide is in, the beach is all rocks, pebbles and rock pools. Here I have focussed on the cliffs, which had some reddish vegetation clinging to them. I don't know what it was, but I do like the extra colour, which drew my attention away from the sea back towards the land.

These three paintings were made on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday of the long weekend just gone. I had my studio open as part of Open Studios West Berkshire and North Hampshire on all three days, and it seemed like a useful sort of thing to be doing in between visitors.

I was attracted to the glassy reflections and to the subtly varying colours of the bottle and its dark contents. I also enjoyed the contrast with the duller texture of the apricots and the book, which toned so seredipitously with the fruit.

Each painting is 33 x 41 cm and is executed on clear-gessoed natural linen in oil paint with a knife (more accurately, a selection of knives). Together, they tell a sort of story - a very ordinary story, of things being consumed - but they aren't necessarily intended to be a set. Despite that, I can't help but think of them as being the beginning, middle and end...
Just in case you were wondering, the wine was a smooth but unremarkable Bordeaux, the book is Leonardo by Martin Kemp, and the apricots were - well, they were apricots, and they were very nice.
The tree stands, tall, proud and solitary, by the entrance to the fort (here, we are looking out of the fort). It made me think of a guardian or sentinel.

Earlier this week, I visited Danebury Hill, where there is a large, well preserved, iron-age hill fort. There is also a very lovely beech wood on the side of the hill. Here, the beech trees are growing over the outer ramparts of the fort, their shallow root systems rising from the ground as the trees cling to the earthworks.

The painting is based on photographs that I took at Danebury.

The Art in Music 2018 exhibition was hung at Newbury Corn Exchange today, and this painting is part of that exhibition.

Based on a performance by Leo Popplewell of Britten's Cello Suites at last year's Newbury Festival, the painting required a lot of thinking about (about a year's worth!). I wanted it to reflect the music itself, and the energy and versatility of the playing. I had a small collection of ink sketches made from near the back of the auditorium, and a CD of the same piece played by another cellist (Mstislav Rostropovich).

I made a multipart wood panel from pieces of leftover floorboard, and sketched the figure and instrument directly onto the wood. I used the sketch to carve a light, partial relief into the wood before applying black and white gesso. I was on fairly safe ground with the main figure, which was based on a couple of my sketches. Adding the extra hands and trying to stop the cellist from looking like an octopus was a bit trickier, and this evolved as the painting progressed.

The dribbly paint went on quite early on, partly to balance the figure and his instrument, but the subtleties of the background, and the all-important representation of the music, took a bit longer to coalesce in my mind and on the painting. I don't have synethesia, I don't "see" sound, and while it does affect how I feel, it isn't a feeling that I have any visual counterpart for. Logic was of limited use, and whimsy was - well, rather whimsical. At one point, I had waves of collaged sheet music wending their colourful way across the panel, but when I stepped back, I realised that it looked clumsy and out of place, so I removed most of it. Attempts to incorporate musical clef symbols also fell flat. Eventually, I went back to an idea that had come from a random association with the trivial fact that Britten wrote the music in the 1970s: the paisley pattern (named for the Scottish town, but based on a Persian design, the buta, or boteh, shape). Somehow, it seemed right - the right amount of order and complexity, perhaps - and all of a sudden I knew what to do with it. With Britten's cello suites playing in the background, I started work on the final phase ...

Then there was the matter of framing the picture.

Solo, framed, but not quite finished...

I had some frame moulding with a profile that I thought suited the picture. It was rather shallow (intended for framing paper behind glass), so I knew I would need to extend it at the back by attaching stripwood (the edges of the tongue-and-groove floorboards aren't very pretty).

But there wasn't enough moulding left, and I had three days before the picture (then still in progress, but starting to come together) was due to be hung! That is, there wasn't enough good moulding left: it had been part of an eBay lot of rejects and remnants, and there were some damaged bits that I had already cut off. I ended up resurrecting the least bad bits, which I mitred together with the remaining good bit to make the bottom of the frame. You can see the joins where the light catches them. I managed to get it so that the longest dribbles of paint hit the lowest point of the damaged rebate (the "lip" that covers the edge of the picture), which I liked. It seemed appropriate to extend my dribbly paint over the frame after it was painted and fitted.

All in all, it was an eventful painting, and, I hope, a successful one. I think it captures something of the player's efforts and something of the elusive nature of the music.

I hope that, if you are attending a performance at Newbury Corn Exchange during this spring's festival, you will stop and look at this painting, and the rest of the works in the exhibition (which, at the time of writing, I have not seen), and I hope that you will enjoy the confluence of art in music.
The Devil's Den is a reconstructed (c. 1921) dolmen (neolithic) near Marlborough in Wiltshire. As far as I can tell, it is the closest such monument to where I live (there seems to be a shortage of suitable stone in Hampshire; certainly the chalk and flint in the immediate vicinity would make very poor building material). Dolmens, which look like stone tables, are actually the structural remains of burial chambers that were once covered in earth. Most have three or more uprights; this has two, but one of them rests on a third, recumbent stone. The stones are sarsens, which are blocks of sandstone created by glacial flow. They are plentiful in that area (which is not far from Avebury and Stonehenge).

I have visited the Devil's Den before, with sketching equipment, but this time I took my painting gear. It was a gloriously, unseasonably, hot and sunny day. I spent maybe two and a half hours on site and completed the picture in the studio, where I empasised the darks (which have a tendency to get lost on site) and the reflected colour on the stones.
There are many wonderful old trees in Savernake Forest in Wiltshire. Oaks tend to dominate the selection (they do get impressively old and gnarled), but there are other trees as well, including many beech trees. I encountered this particular example when I visited the forest earlier this month, and this picture is worked up from a photograph I took then (it was a bit cold for lengthy studies).

This is an exercise in the use of limited tone: black, white, and a middle tone (grey). I used three Molotow acrylic paint marker pen colours for the drawing, deliberately keeping each shade separate and distinct. (I used a fourth colour for my signature).

It looks a bit like a lino print to me, albeit a rather complex one with two printing plates. I like cutting lino (and wood) to make a plate, but have limited patience with the printing process itself and have yet to master the art of registration (printing multiple plates / colours accurately to build up layers). This was rather simpler to do, and very nearly as satisfying.
Winter is the best time to capture the structural essence of a tree. On a bright, clear day, the branches are dramatically stark against the sky, the patterns in the bark are unobscured by the shifting shadows of foliage (and any undergrowth will have died back a little, affording better access to that elusive perfect vantage point...).
The next Artikinesis project will be in Gosport. We will be creating a temporary, room-sized artwork - an installation - on the walls of Sticks Contemporary Gallery. The piece will explore our relationship with trees. We have published a statement for the piece on the Artikinesis web site.

The painted part of the installation will be created on site in five days during February this year. There will also be some projected images (as yet undecided) and an audio element. The latter is being created by Tanith Lawrey. The completed work will remain on show until the end of March 2018.
