This is another image from my day at Botallack, Cornwall. There's no engine house - just a chimney... and some ruins. And rocks, and vegetation, and sky. Lots of sky. I like the way the chimney reaches into that glorious blue sky, and the way that the rocks define the right hand foreground.
I worked from a photograph, taking two afternoons to complete the painting (this is quite unusual for me - I like to finish paintings in one go. I also like to paint on site, but that wasn't possible). This is what the painting looked like at the end of yesterday afternoon:
Today, I moved some of yesterday's paint around - some of it was surprisingly stiff - and added some more, mainly to define the chimney's stonework and to refine the treatment of the foreground.
Oil on canvas, 40 x 40 cm
SO beautiful! I do hope that I can visit this part of the world someday!
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous isn't it? The light was fabulous that day... Botallack is just down the coast from St. Ives, which is famous for its natural light, and for the artists who flock(ed) there.
