Beech Hedge - SOLD

Beech Hedge, A3 (420 x 297mm), acrylic inks on paper
This is one of the pieces I did for Artikinesis' exhibition We Are Forest. These beech trees are growing in a line between two fields and are part of a grown-out beech hedgerow.

Winter trees

Winter Oak (detail)
Winter is the best time to capture the structural essence of a tree. On a bright, clear day, the branches are dramatically stark against the sky, the patterns in the bark are unobscured by the shifting shadows of foliage (and any undergrowth will have died back a little, affording better access to that elusive perfect vantage point...).

These two pictures have been created as part of my preparation work for the Artikinesis exhibition at Sticks Contemporary in Gosport.

Artikinesis: We are forest

The next Artikinesis project will be in Gosport. We will be creating a temporary, room-sized artwork - an installation - on the walls of Sticks Contemporary Gallery. The piece will explore our relationship with trees. We have published a statement for the piece on the Artikinesis web site.

The painted part of the installation will be created on site in five days during February this year. There will also be some projected images (as yet undecided) and an audio element. The latter is being created by Tanith Lawrey. The completed work will remain on show until the end of March 2018.

The Basingstoke Project 2017

Artikinesis’ Basingstoke Project is currently on display upstairs at the Willis Museum in Basingstoke. We are sharing the building with Hampshire Cultural Trust’s Turner and the Sun touring exhibition (downstairs) until the 16th of December, so you might want to allocate a little extra time in order to catch both exhibitions.

Ghost

Ghost. Oil on canvas, 38 x 46 cm
This, a different angle on the ruined chapel at the Holy Ghost cemetery to that seen in my last post, was painted for Artikinesis' Basingstoke Project. I posted it on the Artikinesis site, but not here. It uses a very limited colour palette - there is no red (this is offset a little by the warm brown of the linen ground). I used only Phthalo Blue, Yellow Ochre and Titanium White.

The painting was based entirely on pen sketches made on site and memory.

Not Just Roundabouts

I've always liked the old railway posters. A "Travel" theme prompted this attempt at evoking their spirit, drawn in Molotow One4All Markers on A5. Since Artikinesis did The Basingstoke Project, I have a wealth of source material on Basingstoke (less than ten miles distant and, one could argue - as indeed we did - in need of an image adjustment). This is from a line sketch of the ruined chapel in the Holy Ghost cemetery, not far from the railway station.

Artikinesis exhibition at Blakes Lock

Artikinesis at Blake's Lock began its run on Saturday. There have been quiet times (such as the time that I drew the exhibition hall, above), but there have also been very busy times, and it does seem as if the people who have come to see the exhibition so far have enjoyed it. So have at least some of the people who came to see the Turbine House itself, or who popped in from the adjacent restaurant, or who came to say hello to one of the artists.

Open 10 to 6 daily until 30 September, 10 to 3 on the final day, 1 October.

Blake's Lock - a teaser...

These are details from nine pieces that I have been working on for Artikinesis' Blake's Lock exhibition (17 September to 2 October). I've been considering the surface of the water and thinking about the Victorian turbines...
