The Bromley Arts Festival: a day in a shipping container

Yesterday was the Bromley Arts Festival. It was cold but dry, and the good people of Bromley turned up in plentiful numbers. Quite a few came to see me and my paintings in the shipping-container-turned-pop-up-art-gallery.

Ice cold in Bromley

Just a quick post to say "Hello!" to anybody who picked up a card or a leaflet at the Bromley Arts Festival today, and to tell all and sundry that - despite sub-zero temperatures (it was snowing, a bit) - the Arts Festival went very well, and I even managed to sell a few paintings, a couple of postcards, and one whole book*!

Bromley Book Preview

'Tis only a week until The Bromley Project hits Bromley - one day only in a shipping container in the Market Square - and, amidst all the other preparation, I only just realised that the accompanying book had no preview set up.

This has now been remedied.

It's here! I ordered 10 copies in paperback of my Bromley book from Blurb, and they arrived yesterday. There's no 12" version of this book - just the 7" one.

Bromley Arts Festival

I'm really thrilled to be able to say that I will be at the Bromley Arts Festival, with my Bromley Project, and that we will be occupying the pop-up art gallery!

Another CMYK acrylic knife painting. The cars were enormously tricky, and I did omit some of the street furniture to avoid clutter. Look carefully, and you might spot the building featured in "Looking Up".

Time is running out for the Bromley project - I need to get my book done and printed (and delivered) for the 24th of March. Because that's when I - and my Bromley project - will be at the Bromley Arts Festival!

Behind East Street: Hoist - SOLD

This is (possibly) not a fifth painting in the East Street tetraptych/pentaptych. But it is from that site; it's the building in the middle.

	It occurred to me that, while I took the photographs a while back, I haven't shown you the edges of the Bromley  Four (that's the East Street Tetraptych). So here they are. Clockwise from top: tops, rights, bottoms and lefts.

The Railway Hotel - Better Photographs

A slightly better photograph of the whole painting, taken in subdued daylight, and - below - a couple of close-up shots that worked out quite well.

Terminus

This is the concourse at Bromley North railway station. It was shut the day that I was there, so I took photographs through the metal grille, and it is those photographs that I used to work this image up.

The Railway Hotel, Bromley

This is a pub with a history, with famous clientele (I am told that Ernest Hemmingway, H.G.Wells and David Bowie have all drunk here, although not, one imagines, all at the same time) and a reputation as a live venue (as can be seen in the small acrylic I made in September, reproduced below.)

No Parking (Neal's Yard 2)

So it might not be the flatiron building, but there is something special about these urban wedge-shaped buildings, particularly where the passage of time and the loss of neighbouring buildings has revealed the shape and - inevitably - a bit of character.

Darwin's Greenhouse

You may recall my painting of Darwin's Houses, painted (mostly) on site in Downe, Kent. Well, this is one end of the greenhouse that appeared in that painting.

Bromley Triptych becomes a Tetraptych

I decided that the leftmost painting in the work formerly known as "Bromley Triptych: Behind East Street" didn't quite work in the context, and that - obviously - what was needed was another painting. Either to replace the leftmost painting, or to go in between that panel and the centre one.

So here is the new painting, tentatively entitled "Corner":

It's not the best photograph in the world, but it'll do for now.

Today was misty all day and I was at work for most of it, anyhow. And I haven't got the hang of taking decent photographs under domestic artificial light (flashes reflect off of the shiny surface of the paint). So, please consider these images to be temporary; better photographs, and a few extra words about the panting and/or the subject, will follow in due course.
