New Forest Ponies 2

When I painted New Forest Ponies 1 - a 7 x 5" acrylic on canvas board - it was always my intention to reuse the source image for a bigger, palette knife oil. It took me almost a year and a half to do it, but here is the result.

New Forest Heather 5 - Blasted Tree

Blasted TreeFinished
(daylight)

I started off by telling myself that I was just going to do the sky... but then there was too much blue left, so I made it into green ... and purple ... and before I knew it the painting had progressed to this stage and it was way past bedtime.

Oops.

It took a couple of days before I was able to find the time to work on it again, but eventually I did, and this is the result. The photography, of course, took even longer; domestic artificial light doesn't work very well with my rudimentary set-up, so I had to wait for the weekend.

New Forest Heather 4 - Path

This isn't the first painting I've made using this source photograph - but the previous work was rather small, and it always was my intention to make a larger version.

Oil on canvas, 16 x 20"
SOLD

I had a bit of trouble with the photographs. The ones I took outside were clearer but not straight, and with a noticeable blue cast. The ones I took inside were straighter but just a teensy bit blurred. This is one of the latter.

New Forest Heather 3: Path (7x7)

This is painted from a photograph taken last Wednesday on the same trip that supplied me with the source image for "New Forest Heather 1: From the stream bed".

The original image is decidedly more rectangular, but I seem to have run out of suitably sized canvases with the right proportions for the big portrait version in oils that I was planning. This is a sketch to see if the image works as a square.

You may have noticed that "New Forest Heather 2" is missing from the blog. Well, it exists; I made two versions of this image yesterday evening. You'll find it on DeviantART...

New Forest Heather 1: From the stream bed

One of this summer's most far-flung day trips was to the south of the county; we were planning to visit a specific historical attraction, but it turned out that it was closed on Wednesdays. So was the next random attraction that we found via the increasingly popular pastime of "brown-signing". Refusing to believe that Hampshire was closed on Wednesdays, we continued on to the New Forest. Which was, naturally, open.
