Porth Moina

Porth Moina, oil on canvas, 100 x 73 cm
Porth Moina is in Penwith, Cornwall, on the north coast (and on the southwest coast path) . Porth means "cove" and Moina probably means "mines" in this context.

Ding Dong (Ultramarine)

That really is the name of this place; Ding Dong engine house and mine on the moors at Penwith, Cornwall - close to Men-an-Tol.

The ultramarine is modified in places by red, but not, I think, enough to destroy the "flat" effect.

Baht 'At (On Ilkley Moor)

This place has stayed with me since I was last there, and since I took the monochrome photgraph that my line and wash painting is based on. It was about 15 years ago.

I wasn't, to the best of my recollection, wearing a hat.

The Hurlers, left and right

This is a "housekeeping" post intended to simplify navigation. It is not a new painting.

The Hurlers is a complex of stone circles on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall.

More Hurlers

At Easter, we visited Bodmin Moor's Hurlers; in July I painted some of them. The painting seemed lonely, and seemed to need a companion piece It's taken me a while to get around to doing it, but I've finally painted a second Hurlers piece.

The Hurlers

On Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, there is a trio of stone circles known as the Hurlers (the name come from a legendary game of hurling on a Sunday. In vindictive mode, the Christian god allegedly turned the players to stone). With its multiplicity of stones and ridiculously easy access (road and village - Minions, not Bodmin - are both within spitting distance) it may well be the best known circle in Cornwall.

With some justice.

Temple Old Bridge, Bodmin Moor, New Years' Day 2013

On our way home from West Cornwall, I suggested a small diversion onto Bodmin Moor. It was a gloriously sunny day, and I was keen to snap a moorland scene for reference purposes. And my husband was quite keen on a pasty break (it was lunchtime, and he is, indeed, a true Cornishman).

Grey Wethers and Black Bullocks

I couldn't resist calling these beasts bullocks, despite there being no absolute evidence to support this, and me being sufficiently unfamiliar with bovine appearance to say for certain that these are male animals.

Why is this?
